From Brides To Us, Everyone Is Sporting Customised And Quirky Face Masks. It’s A Whole New Fashion Statement

Clearly, the global pandemic isn’t going to end anytime soon and we are living in times when face masks have become a part of our outfit. And, we are calling it the ‘new normal’ (damn you, coronavirus). If you ask me, it’s like living a never-ending episode of Black Mirror.

Wearing a face mask in public is plain common sense and in case you were wondering, yes, we are supposed to continue wearing it even after it’s all over. But there’s good news, your face masks don’t have to be bland and boring because, get this, aesthetic face masks are the hottest fashion accessory right now.

A few months ago no one would have ever thought that a protective gear like a face mask would one day join the most stylish accessories bandwagon, but leave it to fashion buffs to make even the worst of times fashionable. I mean, I got myself a black boring face mask optimistically hoping this would be temporary but… Cut to four months later, I am shopping for colourful, pretty face masks to pair with my PJs for when I go out to buy groceries.

While we make peace with the current scenario, wearing a mask that’s bright and comes with a quirky and cute print isn’t really a bad idea and that’s why I am loving it. Plus, this has helped fuelled business for many small vendors and textile manufacturers out there who were struggling to get things moving in the lockdown. Since a simple three-layered fabric mask is safe to wear for people who aren’t in the healthcare field or essential services, this trend has helped small start-ups, artisans and manufacturers earn from their artsy, but functional pieces.

Also, the stylish masks are becoming quite a hype on social media and becoming an Instagram trend. Designer mask selfies and hashtags like #mymaskiscuterthanyours are proof that the trend is having a moment right now. Not only this, if you are getting married this year, you might want to look for an embroidered and embellished bridal mask to match your bridal outfit.

Since the fancy face masks are becoming quite a rage, it’s only obvious that the fashion brands will cash in on the demand. Luxury brands like Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler and OFF-White have already forayed into the production of high-end designer face masks. Back home, Indian designers Anita Dongre, Ritu Kumar, Shyamal and Bhumika, Payal Singhal and Masaba Gupta, among others have come up with their own line of fashionable face masks. Some of these brands are also distributing free masks or donating proceeds to Covid -19 relief which is pretty great.

However, it is important that to make sure the cloth face mask you get yourself the one that is 100% safe and gives you best protection against Covid. It needs to be three-layered, with good fabric and genuine. After all, these face masks are essentials first, and a fashion staple much later.
