5 Stunning Fashion Hits And 5 Fails From The Ambani Wedding

Mother of all celebrity weddings, the Ambanis are laying out one fabulous wedding after another! Unless you have been living under a rock, which, why?  The Akash and Shloka wedding festivities has taken over news and social media so the whole of Instagram looks like one giant celebration. The guest list included all the A-listers, as expected, with some of our favourite celebs making an appearance.

Here are some of the looks that totally worked for us… and some that didn’t!

What Worked

Priyanka Chopra

Kicking off the list of style icons at the Ambani wedding, Priyanka stepped out in a silver chantilly lace saree from Tarun Tahiliani. Embellished with Swarovski crystals and pearls, the monotone danglers and bracelet added a classy touch.

Why It Worked:  An embroidery heavy lace saree is sure to keep a wedding look modern yet graceful.

Deepika Padukone

Going for a hot pink number from couturier Sabyasachi, Deepika wore an organza saree with golden zardosi work all over. The lightweight saree was styled with heavy jewellery, a choker AND a rani haar. You’d think it would all be too much but she pulled it off and with aplomb. 

Why It Worked: Complementing her tall frame, the lightweight saree hugged Deepika’s curves in all the right places making for an elegant yet sharp look.

Alia Bhatt

Another Sabyasachi on the list, Alia Bhatt kept her look bright and youthful in a yellow lehenga, paired with a plunging blouse and sheer dupatta. She added a heavy necklace from the Sabya heritage collection and a potli bag to complete the ensemble.

Why It Worked: Dull colours and boring silhouettes can age a person. Alia’s pick of this vibrant outfit with  young colours makes her look stunning and like a breath of fresh air. 

Malaika Arora Khan

Malaika Arora Khan has had a style renaissance in the past year and we are all for it! For the Ambani reception party, she wore a dull pink lehenga from Seema Khan. The plunging blouse was paired with a heavy beaded necklace.

Why It Worked: With antique gold zardosi and mirror work, the outfit was had an old world charm to it that can be adapted for  fancy evening soirees.

Sonali Bendre

An offbeat yet effective look, Sonali Bendre was a powerhouse in a rich sherwani from Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. The deep burgundy mixed with with an opulent hand embroidered golden detailing, went down as one of the best looks from the night.

Why It Worked: Experimentation is key. Stepping out of her comfort zone, her outfit is proof that unconventional ensembles can really make heads turn!

What Didn’t Work

Diana Penty

Top celebrity designer Manish Malhotra is known for both of his fashion hits and misses. Diana’s statement bell-sleeved number is one of our fashion misses of the night. The corseted top doesn’t seem to fit well and the chunky accessories look out of place.

Why It Didn’t Work: Corset blouses are in for the summer shaadi season BUT only if they are tailored well. The layered bell sleeves also did no favours to the already unbalanced ensemble.

Kiara Advani

Kiara Advani is usually in her Indian best at events but this look from Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla fell flat last night. The lehenga is too long for her petite frame and the embroidery caught the light in the most unflattering way. 

Why It Didn’t Work: The solid dupatta paired with the glitzy lehenga is a style contradiction we can’t get behind.

Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty’s saree game is best in the business, no doubt. But this lehenga style dull pink drapes from Faabiiana is one of our least favourites. The saree is of no impact and the oversized potli bag is distracting and not in a good way.

Why It Didn’t Work: No matter how much you try, a satin blouse is not going to save a dull looking saree on a glitzy evening!

Disha Patani

Usually dressed in her fashionable best, Disha Patani’s saree from Falguni Shane Peacock suffered major fitting issues. We are not a fan of the ultra-plunge blouse for a wedding and the skirt somehow managed to cling for its life long enough for the pictures to be taken.

Why It Didn’t Work: If you are uncomfortable in an ill-fitted outfit, no matter how amazing it is, the entire look will suffer.

Ekta Kapoor

Ekta Kapoor has been on the radar of fashion police more often than not and we are starting to see why! Her candy orange lehenga paired with a faux dupatta style off-shoulder blouse looks like hasty styling we are not digging. 

Why It Didn’t Work: Because it looks like something someone put together in a crazy hurry.
