1 Piece, 3 Ways: The Classic Skater Dress

1 Piece, 3 Ways: The Classic Skater Dress

Like the classic little black dress, every fashionista owns a ‘skater’, either in the form of a dress or a skirt. I must say that if you don’t own one, then you should — because it can be your perfect go-to for this party season. Let me just say that the skater dress is something I am in love with, as it is totally versatile. Did you know that the ‘skater dress’ is technically derived from the flare, mini A-line skirts that female figure skaters used to wear back in the day? Cute, right? Giving me that dainty school-girl vibe, the skater dress is something that is constantly on trend and can also be layered so beautifully to fit every style. With my skater dresses, I usually tend to stick to either one colour, colourblocks, or subtle geometric and aztec prints — mainly because it is a lot easier and quicker to work with when layering, giving you a better chance to be edgy and quirky with your picks. And the best part of this dress is that it suits everybody — short, petite, tall! We have seen so many celebs like Alia Bhatt, Parineeti Chopra, and Katrina Kaif wear different versions of this iconic style, pulling off different vibes — casual, sexy, formal, or even boho-chic.

Now, we all know that layers is a trend that is totally making the big leagues this season, whether it’s jewellery or clothes! So, incorporating the classic with what’s trendy, we show you how to style the signature skater dress in 3 different ways, taking you from AM to PM with that one key piece.

The product used in this edit is a textured, strappy skater dress from Boohoo.

1. The It’s-Time-To-Party Look

Since it is the party season, I am going to kick-off the dress with the time-to-party look! This look is simplistic yet oh-so classy. Keeping things monochromatic with the structure of this style, black and yellow is the way to go (cue the song). The maxi sheer kimono, paired with the cutout black heels by Zara, sort of give it an edgy, fierce vibe, with a pop of colour thanks to the dress. Keeping the accessories on trend, wear this dress with a rose-gold pendant choker necklace and you’re ready to hit the dance-floor! Christmas and NYE cannot come any sooner.

2. The Classy Grunge Look

Giving this look a slightly rustic grunge yet classic twist, you can wear your skater dress as a skirt in this case — think Jessica Day a.k.a Zoey Deschanel from New Girl. Layer your skirt with a sweatshirt or woollen jumper (the weather will call for a little layering…hello winter) and slip-on a pair of ankle boots with a small heel! Where biker chick meets rustic chic, complete the look with a cute and dainty choker to add a feminine, elegant touch.

3. The Boho-Chic Look

The most feminine look of the lot, this style involves a lot of fringe and tassels. Giving you the perfect go-to brunch date or holiday spirit vibe, instead of using black, I decided to pair it with browns. The combination complements each other, giving a summery, vacation feel. The tie-up gladiators, along with the tasseled fringe sling and coin necklace add that boho-esque vibe to the outfit, whilst the cropped-denim jacket gives it that cowgirl feel. You’re definitely going to get the holiday feels with this outfit.
