There’s A Reason It’s Called Beauty Sleep! It Has So Many Skincare Benefits

As an adult who’s practically always tired, I don’t really need reasons to hit the sheets and shut myself off from the world for a couple of hours. I admit, I had a complicated relationship with sleep as a kid (I was fussy and pretty energetic) but I have matured now. I value even those few hours of ZZZs and the littlest sleep I can get anywhere, anytime. In case you are still fussy about it and spend your nights scrolling Instagram, binging on Netflix or dancing on Bollywood songs in your room (some people do that), I’d like to tell you that a good night’s sleep is extremely important. Why would there be a day solely dedicated to your nap time, otherwise? Today is World Sleep Day which is observed to raise awareness of sleep disorders and help those who are dealing with some sort of sleeping issues.

It took me some time to understand how important sleep is for a sane mind, good health and beauty. Yes guys, beauty sleep is a real thing and not just a propaganda or myth. An uninterrupted sleep of at least seven to eight hours can do wonders for your skin. It can make your skin look younger, healthier and brighter, which not getting a proper shut-eye can have adverse effects. There are several beauty benefits of a good sleep and in the spirit of World Sleep Day today, we are going to discuss how it works, why it is absolutely necessary and a few things you can do before bed to get a better sleep and wake up looking all fresh and flawless.

Age rewind

The lesser you spend time sleeping, the faster you age. It’s simple math. Not getting enough sleep can speed up your aging clock, making fine lines and wrinkles appear sooner than you would like. Sleep helps blood circulation and it’s the time when the organs build collagen and repairs damage.

Healthier eye area

No one really likes dark circles, eye bags and puffiness around peepers. But they are simply the tell tale signs of a poor sleep. Even one sleepless night can give you these beauty woes and tired looking eyes. Sleeping helps relax eyes and keeps the blood flowing around the eye area, which reduces the chances of fluid accumulation.

Plump and brighter skin

When you doze off, your skin goes into repair and resurrection mode. It works on healing your skin by undoing sun damage and other effects of environmental aggressors. Also, the products you use on your skin before bed absorb better and work doubly fast when you get enough rest.

Now that you are probably convinced to prioritise sleep before anything we are sure you’d work on improving your sleep schedule. However, if you can’t seem to go into slumber as soon as you hit the pillow, here are a few things you can do to sleep better and maximise the effects of your sleep.

Take a relaxing bath

There’s nothing in the world that a long shower or a hot water bath cannot fix. A good night’s sleep is no different. If you aren’t up for taking a shower in the night, though,  wash your face, arms and feet. Also, apply some lavender oil on your feet and sweet smelling moisturiser. It will help you sleep better.

Stay away from screen

A couple of hours before your bedtime, bid adieu to all your gadgets. This not only strains your eyes but also makes it harder to have a deep sleep. Instead, read a book, listen to some soothing music, count the stars (or sheep) or make up happy scenarios in your head lying down. Anything would do except exposing your eyes to blue light.

Set the mood

Prepare your body (and mind) for a beauty sleep. Clean up your surroundings, set your room temperature, steer clear from having alcohol or caffeine (duh) and get comfortable in your bed. Slap on an eye mask and dream away. You’ll wake up glowing, healthy skin.
