The Crown Season 4 Teaser: A Royal Wedding, Princess Diana And Margaret Thatcher Steal The Queen’s Spotlight

My fellow historical fiction buffs, lend me thy eyes and ears. Netflix has just dropped the official teaser for The Crown Season 4! Which means, after teasing with the casting news of Emma Corrin as Princess Diana and Gillian Anderson as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, we finally get to see them in action! The historical drama series chronicles the reign of the longest reigning British monarch, (or actually any monarch of head of state in the world), Queen Elizabeth II. With Season 3 introducing a time leap, Olivia Colman took over from Claire Foy as the older Queen, and Tobias Menzies took over from Matt Smith as The Duke of Edinburgh. Helena Bonham Carter took over from Vanessa Kirby as the Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, while Josh O’Connor stepped in as Prince Charles, and Erin Doherty as Princess Anne.

The core cast, including Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker Bowles, Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother and Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten, continue to reprise their roles in the new season. However, The Crown Season 4 moves the spotlight to focus more on the reverberations caused by the arrival on the scene of its two new characters. The season will be about Lady Diana Spencer and her romance with the Prince of Wales, and their royal wedding, which was a ‘fairytale wedding’ that was televised and watched by some 750 million people worldwide. The focus will also be on the divisive politics introduced by the ascension of Margaret Thatcher as Britain’s Prime Minister and the tensions that arose between her and The Queen.

According to the official synopsis “As the 1970s are drawing to a close, Queen Elizabeth (Olivia Colman) and her family find themselves preoccupied with safeguarding the line of succession by securing an appropriate bride for Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor), who is still unmarried at 30. As the nation begins to feel the impact of divisive policies introduced by Britain’s first female Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson), tensions arise between her and the Queen which only grow worse as Thatcher leads the country into the Falklands War, generating conflict within the Commonwealth. While Charles’ romance with a young Lady Diana Spencer (Emma Corrin) provides a much-needed fairytale to unite the British people, behind closed doors, the Royal family is becoming increasingly divided.”

The teaser gives as plenty of glimpses at Emma Corrin’s Lady Diana and Gillian Anderson’s Margaret Thatcher, and I have to say, the resemblances are uncanny! The introductory scene in the teaser doesn’t even show Corrin’s face but it is evident from her posture and gait, and the hair that it is Princess Diana. She’ll be donning some of the most iconic outfits worn by the Princess of Wales, who was known for her style, grace and fashion statements as much as for being a People’s Princess. In fact, The Crown Season 4 has been a highly anticipated one, more so because of Princess Diana’s storyline being explored on the show.

As the voiceover in the teaser ominously foreshadows it, the fairytale usually ends with “and they lived happily ever after”. But marriage isn’t an end, it is the beginning of a transformation for both Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Looks like the show is going to give us ample insight into their tumultuous marriage, affairs, mindset and the arrival of their children, Princes William and Harry.

Even Gillian Anderson’s Margaret Thatcher looks spot on, exuding a demeanour fit for The Iron Lady. Something tells me she just might give tough competition to Meryl Streep’s version from the eponymous film. But of course, there can be no overshadowing Olivia Colman as Elizabeth II, in all her uniformed glory, exuding enough charisma in that one shot to reign over all.

The Crown Season 4 drops on Netflix on November 15, 2020, in time for a nice Diwali binge. I’m excited!
