Taylor Swift Did Her Own Hair And Makeup, Wrote And Directed Her ‘Cardigan’ Music Video In Lockdown. And Her Fans Are In Awe!

Everyone: “2020 is the worst year.” Taylor Swift: “Hold my piano….” Okay, these aren’t my words. This is what fans of the singer-songwriter are saying, because according to them, Taylor Swift just saved us all by unexpectedly dropping her eighth album, ‘Folklore’ on Friday. The album dropped with a less-than 24-hour notice. An additional treat for her fans was when she released the ‘Cardigan’ music video as well. The lyrics of the song go, “When you are young, they assume you know nothing.” But here we are, with the 30-year-old singer having not just performed but also written and directed her own music video—in quarantine. Thanks, TS, for showing ‘em!

That isn’t all. In her Instagram post the day before, the Reputation singer revealed that while she obviously had help from her team for the shoot, it was conducted with utmost care and with all safety protocol followed… to the T (see what I did there?). Taylor wrote,

“The entire shoot was overseen by a medical inspector, everyone wore masks, stayed away from each other, and I even did my own hair, makeup, and styling.”

The final product is quite stunning, I must say. The video begins with Taylor Swift playing a piano in a cosy cabin. The piano, which is a symbol for her music I suppose, transports her into an enchanted forest, and then once again into tumultuous stormy waters, before bringing her back to her warm cabin.

Of course, there are special effects and a whole lot of editing magic involved, but the production standards of content in the times of coronavirus  surely went up a few notches because of this video.

So is this how heavily we’ll be relying on visual effects to achieve desired results now that social distancing and health concerns are to be accounted for? Will having a medical inspector on set become a mandatory clause for all productions, big and small? And will actors be more inclined to do their own hair and makeup as they get ready to shoot as much as they can from their homes and personal studios? Hopefully we get answers for this soon.

As for the song, Cardigan’s lyrics are a regular Taylor Swift narrative and about her IRL love life, in this case, most probably about Joe Alwyn. The couple began dating sometime in early 2017, and fans who have microanalysed Swift’s previous songs about her beau believe that this one alludes to the trajectory of their romance. Back in 2016, when Swift wasn’t in a good place, Joe had reportedly been by her side through it all. Perhaps, the lyrics. “When I felt like I was an old cardigan / Under someone’s bed / You put me on and said I was your favourite,” could refer to that? But then again, there are other theories too!

The reception to Cardigan has been pretty positive, with the video being one of the fastest to reach 500k views from Swift’s repertoire. The lyrics are striking a chord with her young audience.

Someone even drew parallels between Swift’s video and Harry Styles’ ‘Falling’ video!

Swift has revealed that the standard edition of Folklore includes 16 songs, while the deluxe edition has a bonus track.
