Miley Cyrus Opens Up About “Too Much Conflict” That Ended Her Marriage With Liam Hemsworth

By  |

When you’re young and in love, you think that you’re going to be together forever. And for some couples, this does happen. But for most of us, reality and adulthood set in, or sometimes, even a tragedy or a sudden change of events, that shifts the course entirely. For Miley Cryus, something quite similar happened in her marriage with long-time beau and The Last Song co-star Liam Hemsworth. The couple got married in late 2018, but even before a year was up, it ended. In a recent interview, the Wrecking Ball singer talked about what might’ve caused the estrangement between them

Miley Cyrus recently appeared on The Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM radio, where she talked candidly about her marriage with the Hemsworth brother. There were some clarifications, like the fact that alcohol was not responsible for any of it. And even some revelations, like when Miley talked about the aftermath of the couple’s home burning down in the California wildfires, and how that affected her tremendously.

We cannot even imagine what losing her home, with all of her belongings, every single thing she owned would’ve been like. And that fact that she wasn’t even in the country when it all went down.

“We were together since 16. Our house burned down. We had been like, engaged—I don’t know if we really ever thought we were actually going to get married, but when we lost our house in Malibu—which if you listen to my voice pre- and post-fire, they’re very different so that trauma really affected my voice. And I was actually in South Africa, so I couldn’t come home, and like, my animals were tied to a post at the beach. I lost everything. I had polaroids of Elvis, like front row, passed on from—I got a couple grandmas to give me their Elvis polaroids. I always became friends with my friends’ grandmas so I could get the goods from the artists I love.”

What hurt her even more was that she lost really important memories of her life in that fire. And from what Miley Cyrus said, this seems to have impacted her relationships with Liam Hemsworth, in a way that most tragedies do when they give you this moment of clarity in your head, about how she did love Liam but there was too much conflict to deal with in the aftermath.

“I had so much and it was all gone, every song I had ever written was in that house. Every photograph of me that my parents had given to me, all my scripts, I lost everything. And so in trying to put that back together, instead of going, ‘Oh, nature kind of did something I couldn’t do for myself; it forced me to let go,’ I ran toward the fire. Which is not abnormal, a lot of animals do this and end up dying, like deers run into the forest. You’re attracted to that heat and me being an intense person and not wanting to sit with it, and not wanting to go, you know, ‘What could be purposeful about this?’ I just clung to what I had left of that house, which was me and him. And I really do and did love him very, very, very much and still do, always will.”

“There was too much conflict…. When I come home, I want to be anchored by someone. I don’t get off on drama or fighting.”

The singer recently dropped her new album, Plastic Hearts, which many are saying is one her best till date. She’s been making appearances on several talk shows. In another such appearance on The Howard Stern Show, she talked about breaking her sobriety during the pandemic.

“The hardest times have been in this pandemic. And a lot of people, their sobriety broke during this time. I was one of them. Luckily, I haven’t gone back to using any drugs, but I was drinking during the pandemic.”

However, she doesn’t see this as a relapse, because she believes drinking isn’t exactly one of the demons that she’s battling. It just doesn’t do that for her anymore.

“I regressed because, for me, drinking hasn’t been my demon. But it does not get me going any further. If anything, it just makes me not reach my full potential, which is unacceptable to me. Like, I will not accept anyone or anything that causes me to not reach my fullest potential.”

However, even though Miley Cyrus may have not attributed her split with Liam Hemsworth to her troubles with alcohol, she did acknowledge its effect her relationships because she was never giving her best to her relationships when she was drinking.

“I’m not the best partner; I’m not the best daughter. I’m not the best sister. I can be a little unreliable. So if that’s an alcoholic—if we’re not measuring it by how much we drink but how we perform as a human being—then I would say alcohol is a problem for me because I’m not at my best.”

Well, you know acceptance is the first step to recovery and extricating oneself out of a problem. It’s great to see that Miley Cyrus is in a better space mentally, and emerging stronger!
