Masaba’s TB Post About Sonam Kapoor’s Denim Saree Has Got Us Dreaming About The Denim Drape. Here’s How To Recreate The Look In 2020

One of the many reasons I am fascinated with the six-yard drape is that this particular piece is so versatile and easy to modify according to your style. Conventionally a traditional item of clothing, saree is no more limited to weddings, religious ceremonies and formal events. This timeless piece has been reinvented into a range of contemporary outfit options, be it the different draping styles or cool blouses and accessories pairings or the use of an exceptional material. For example, the sequinned Manish Malhotra saree has been taking the centre stage as it becomes a party MVP among celebrities (you’d see a lot of women sporting sarees at parties now, just saying), and then there is the casual version of the drape, a denim saree that Sonam Kapoor wore in 2017 but recently turned up again in an Instagram post by designer Masaba Gupta, and hopefully in the fashion scene too.

Masaba posted a throwback picture of Sonam Kapoor wearing her offbeat creation, a denim saree and wrote in the caption, “And next on our list of Greatest Hits is the denim saree i did for @sonamkapoor – denim is known to mostly be heavy & not so fluid & the sari is usually made in fabric that is everything but rigid! When @rheakapoor and I thought of this, we immediately sourced the softest denim we could find.” She goes on to mention how a lot of her followers loved the saree and created their own editions of the look. “While this piece was originally designed to be worn as a whole look with boxy pants with the drape attached & a turtle-neck crop top – lots of you have sent me photos wearing it beautifully as separates. This is special because it really is a Wear-As-you-like piece & as we head into the new year that is exactly the focus! Cool, comfortable, statement separates!” she wrote.

Showcasing a traditional take on the denim-on-denim trend, actress Nabha Natesh wore this saree in light hued denim fabric featuring floral embroidery that looks so feminine and cool at the same time and paired it with an embellished denim crop top in a slightly different shade of denim from that of the saree. She accessorised the saree with a broad belt and we love everything about this look.

You might have a pair of ripped denim jeans in your wardrobe as you read this but have you ever thought of rocking a ripped one? Another one from Sonam’s style files, this saree made of ripped denim paired with a loose white shirt and gold earrings is how you meld ethic with street style the right way.

Bordered denim drape

This saree in dark greyish denim a sleek border is an elegant look if you want to experiment with the denim drape but don’t want to go overboard with a distressed denim fabric or pant style saree. For fashion minimalists who want to test the waters with an understated denim saree, this is your best bet. Pair it with a denim blouse that complements the saree and you’re sorted.

Pant sarees are huge right now for obvious reasons. They are cool and contemporary and add a modern touch to your classic traditional fashion piece. Add denim to it you’ve got yourself an experimental saree look. This is a fusion wear you would love to sport for your BFF’s wedding or your college events for the sole reason that it’s so quirky and fashion-forward.

Here’s a bonus! If you aren’t too sure about the denim drape yet and not sure how the fabric would look wrap around but love the idea of featuring denim to your ethnic looks, here is one super stylish way to make your normal saree equal parts sanskari and sexy. Pair your saree with a denim jacket as a blouse like Taapsee or simply drape a saree and snub your blouse with a denim shirt tied at the bottom with sleeves rolled up. Edgy and elegant!
