Kim Kardashian Was Constantly Body-shamed And Bullied By The Press During Her First Pregnancy. This Is Shameful

They say there’s nothing like a bad press. For celebrities, being relevant and staying in the limelight is assumed more crucial than anything and a lot of times, their mental peace is compromised. They don’t even spare them in the most vulnerable and difficult of times. There have been multiple instances, from Britney Spears to Rhea Chakraborty on the home turf, where the tabloids have stooped low for coverage and said ridiculous things about celebrities. While watching the Britney Spears documentary that released recently, another celebrity opened up about the traumatising treatment she got from the media when she was pregnant. It was the reality TV star, entrepreneur and businesswoman, Kim Kardashian. She posted a series of stories recalling the constant body-shaming and bullying she endured during her first pregnancy.

Kim wrote, “So, I finally watched the Britney Spears documentary this week and it made me feel a lot of empathy for her. The way the media played a big role in her life the way it did can be very traumatizing and it can really break even the strongest person. No matter how public someone’s life may seem, no one deserves to be treated with such cruelty or judgement for entertainment.” She further added in the next slide, “Looking back at my own experiences, I remember a time when I felt this way.”

It’s natural that women gain weight during pregnancy but still, society expects them to fit into the beauty ideals and it’s harder for the women in the limelight. They are constantly on the radar, being bullied and trolled for any pound they gain. From being compared to a killer whale to another celebrity Kate Middleton who was also pregnant at the same time, Kim Kardashian went through a tough time. She wrote, “When I was pregnant with North, I was suffering from preeclampsia, which made me swell uncontrollably. I gained 60 lbs and delivered almost 6 weeks early and I cried every single day over what was happening to my body, mainly from the pressures of being constantly compared to what society considered a healthy person should look like – as well as being compared to Shamu the Whale by the media.” This is so sad and unfair.

Kim went on to share the covers of the most popular and prestigious publications that did a piece comparing her to a pregnant Kate Middleton and watched her weight at every stage of her pregnancy. She wrote, “Looking at all of the photos of myself online and in magazines made me so insecure and I had this fear of wondering if I would ever get my pre baby body back. I was shamed on a weekly basis with cover stories that made my insecurities so painful I couldn’t leave the house for months after. It really broke me.”

Pregnancy weight shaming is real and what’s worse is that people think it’s okay to judge, compare and mock pregnant women for their weight. They don’t realise that this could fuel body image issues and postpartum depression in women, not to mention turn the happiest time of their life into the most depressing one. It’s sad that celebrities are made to feel embarrassed, insecure and fret over every inch during their pregnancy. Can we please stop exploiting and ill-treating them just for the sake of some clicks and double taps? That’d be great!
