Khloé Kardashian Opens Up Over Unedited Bikini Photo Controversy, Says She Was Called Ugly, Fat Sister

My mother and brother love making fun of me over the fact that most of my selfies are in that one particular pose. Face tilted, top-down angle, and always favouring my left profile. Honestly, I don’t care. Having been a fat, ugly, chashmish girl all the time, my world changed when I discovered selfies. I could finally ascertain and determine what made me look flattering, and I could choose the best one from a lot. For people struggling with body confidence, this is pretty huge. It’s kind of why I understand and empathise with Khloé Kardashian and her issues with an unedited picture of her in a bikini, that got mired in controversy recently. So much so, that she had to step up and clarify.

What happened with Khloé Kardashian?

Reportedly, the controversy is surrounding this one picture of the Kardashian sister, which her team was trying to get taken down because it was unedited and showed Khloé in an unflattering light. Naturally, she was trolled and ridiculed for being insecure and vain, and not accepting her body for who she was. We often assume that celebrities are just vain people but at the same time, we also think that they look good in every way, and so it’s completely overdramatic for them to cite reasons to get photos taken down or not be clicked in a certain manner.

However, that is so not true. Our beauty standards are so skewed, that even the most idealistic beauties might find parts of themselves that they don’t like and therefore, don’t want highlighted.

What Khloé Kardashian posted on her Instagram

Khloé posted videos and screenshots from an Instagram Live on her profile to show her non-photoshopped body to her followers. She then wrote a lengthy caption in which she defended her decision to have her team get the untouched photo taken down. And as someone who uses filters, never takes a photo sitting, and crops photos to hide her flabby arms, I totally get where she is coming from.

Khloé wrote, ““Hey guys, this is me and my body unretouched and unfiltered. The photo that was posted this week is beautiful. But as someone who has struggled with body image her whole life, when someone takes a photo of you that isn’t flattering in bad lighting or doesn’t capture your body the way it is after working so hard to get it to this point – and then shares it to the world – you should have every right to ask for it to not be shared – regardless of who you are.”

The “fat, ugly Kardashian sister”

Khloé Kardashian then went on to reveal that she had been subjected to ridicule all her life for not being as ‘ideal’ as her sisters in terms of her body, mostly because of her weight.

““In truth, the pressure, constant ridicule and judgment my entire life to be perfect and to meet other’s standards of how I should look has been too much to bear. ‘Khloe is the fat sister.’ ‘Khloe is the ugly sister.’ ‘Her dad must not be her real dad because she looks so different.’ ‘The only way she could have lost that weight must have been from surgery.’ Should I go on?”

However, she said that she wouldn’t be taken seriously when she complained about it because people just dismissed it as frivolous, since she came from privilege. Some even thought that as a celebrity who appeared on a reality show about her private life, she had signed up to get so mercilessly scrutinised.

“Oh but who cares how she feels because she grew up in a life of privilege. She’s also on a reality show so she signed up for all of this. I’m of course not asking for sympathy but I am asking to be acknowledged for being human. I am not perfect but I promise you that I try everyday to live my life as honestly as possible and with empathy and kindness. It doesn’t mean that I have not made mistakes. But I’m not going to lie. It’s almost unbearable trying to live up to the impossible standards that the public have all set for me.”

What’s more, Khloé pointed out that even when she decided to channel it all into getting in shape, people would still assume that she got work done, thereby dismissing all the hard efforts she had put into her body.

“For over a decade now in photos, every single flaw and imperfection has been micro-analyzed and made fun of to the smallest detail and I am reminded of them everyday by the world. And when I take that criticism to use as motivation to get myself in the best shape of my life and to even help others with the same struggles, I am told I couldn’t have done it through hard work and I must have paid for it all,” Khloé said.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashians star went on to add that she likes a little edit on her photos to make her look good, just as much as the next person, and she will continue to do so, because no one should feel ashamed of choosing how they want their body to look.

“I love a good filter, good lighting and an edit here and there. The same way I throw on some make-up, get my nails done, or wear a pair of heels to present myself to the world the way I want to be seen and it’s exactly what I will continue to do unapologetically. My body, my image and how I choose to look and what I want to share is my choice. It’s not for anyone to decide or judge what is acceptable or not anymore.”

I honestly don’t get the point in ridiculing people over wanting to get their photos taken down or not granting permission to use certain photos because they don’t think they look flattering in them. I have had a few friends who, despite my repeated pleas to take down photos where I don’t think I look good, continue to post them, because they find it funny. Well guess what? It’s really uncool. And even here, consent should matter.

Khloé Kardashian ended her post by talking to people who felt the something similar and struggled to fit into the ridiculous beauty standards the society has set for women, particularly female celebrities.

“For those else who feel the constant pressure of not ever feeling perfect enough, I want you to know I see you and I understand. Everyday I am told by my family and friends who love me that I am beautiful but I know that it needs to be believed from within. We are all unique and perfect in our own way. Whichever way one chooses to be seen. I have realized that we cannot continue to live life trying to fit into the perfect mould of what others have set for us. Just do you and make sure your heart is happy.”

I say, hear hear!
