Jennifer Lopez Accused Of Using Botox While Shehnaaz Gill And Malaika Arora Shamed For Showing Wrinkles. We Just Can’t Win With The Age-Shamers, Can We?

By  |

I follow a lot of meme pages on Instagram and spend my time ROLFing after work but recently I came across a post which wasn’t funny but sad, and incredibly true. It had these cute illustrations about how women are constantly judged by the society, regardless of what they choose to do. A working mom is criticised for prioritising career over family, while a stay-at-home mom is ridiculed for not being financially independent. Similarly, women are judged for marrying too young just as much as women who wait till their 30s to get hitched. Celebrities aren’t spared from these unsolicited remarks either. In fact, since it’s so easy to slam someone on the internet, famous women are shamed for every miniscule or mammoth thing they do.

I am saying this because recently, Jennifer Lopez was accused of looking suspiciously young in one of her Instagram videos where a user suggested that she is lying about not having Botox done. In the video, Lopez tries on a face mask and says, “Honestly, I cannot even see a line on my face. I feel like it took 10 years off my face.” An Instagram user commented, “But can I just mention that brows and forehead doesn’t move at all when you talk or try to express… you definitely have Botox. And tons of it. And it’s all good. Just saying.” That’s funny because if she had wrinkles and fine lines showing, people would have bombarded her comment section with trolls and age-shamed her mercilessly. Basically, women would be judged for ageing and looking young for their age *face palm*

Lopez responded to the comment saying, “LOL that’s just my face!!! for the 500 millionth time…I have never done Botox or any injectables or surgery!! Just saying. Get you some JLO Beauty and feel beautiful in your own skin!! And here is another JLO Beauty secret: try spending your time being more positive, kind and uplifting of others. Don’t spend your time trying to bring others down that will keep you youthful and beautiful too!!! Sending you love.”

The most common troll for a female celebrity is on how they look or how they appear slightly different from what their audience is used to seeing. Most actresses are age-shamed as soon as they enter their late 30s or show natural and normal signs of ageing. Even back home, the list of celebrities who have been trolled for their age is extremely long, with Malaika Arora being a constant target. The 40 and fabulous actress has been shamed for dating a man younger than her and wearing clothes that the online moral police deemed inappropriate for her age. Their main concern was that since she is a mom, she shouldn’t wear outfits with a plunging neckline, slits or backless gowns (I know, I am rolling my eyes too).

One of her pictures where her wrinkles were visible got serious hate and insulting comments regarding her age. She hit back to her age-shamers with another picture in a bikini and fitting caption, though. She wrote, “Being happy is a choice .n I choose to be happy ….. also I think happiness looks good on me…… so keep ur opinions n ur negativity to urself n spare me ur crap #notinterested #toobusybeinghappy #notimefornegativity #tuesdaythoughts #43nhappy [sic].”

Younger celebrities like Shenaaz Gill who is merely in her 20s too received an age-shaming comment by a follower who pointed out wrinkles on her face while she was live on Instagram. Although she said it was her makeup that broke down because of laughing too much, we don’t see why having wrinkles too (if it was, in fact, wrinkles) was something even worth pointing out.

It just shows how people don’t blink before putting someone down. They’d shame a younger woman for showing wrinkles and judge a grown-up woman for maintaining her youth. Honesty, we should simply flaunt those lines or get a Botox for our fading youth, if that’s what we feel like doing. We might as well do what we want since we can’t win anyway.
