#Culture: These Taiwanese Grandparents Became Fashion Influencers By Posing In Abandoned Clothes In Their Laundry Shop. They Are Fashion (And Couple) Goals!

Fashion blogging has really picked up pace in the last decade and more so in the lockdown. Now the scene is such that every day there’s a new fashion blogger popping up on our feed with their #OOTD or #fashionblogger hashtags. There is a plethora of fashion inspiration on Instagram, yes, but only a few of them influencers really strike a chord with you. Maybe it’s because their impeccable style or their simplicity that you relate to or just maybe because they are so eclectic and out of the ordinary that you feel their Instagram page is a breath of fresh air in a rather showy world of fashion.

I stumbled upon one such fashion influencer couple who are everything I just mentioned and more. Not only their style is on fleek but they are so cute you’d want to follow them right away. Meet Instagram’s new fashion IT couple Hsu Sho-Er and Chang Wan Ji. They are not some 30 year olds from a fashion capital like Paris or London with fancy schmancy clothes. In fact, it is an octogenarian couple from Taiwan who pose in discarded and forgotten clothes that people left in their laundry shop. Their styling and modeling poses are so on point that they could give any young fashion influencer a run for their money. See for yourself.

Their Instagram account @wantshowasyoung (bonus points for the handle name BTW) was started by their grandson Reef Chang  in June and has gained over 600k followers in a couple of months. Let me give you a quick backstory to how it all happened. 84-years-old Hsu Sho-Er and her husband Chang Wan Ji who is 83, own a laundromat in central Taiwan. Due to the pandemic, the business slowed down and the couple was usually spent the whole day sitting out on the shop waiting for customers. Reef, seeing his grandparents bored, decided to make a good use of their time and some 300 pieces of clothes lying around in their shop by starting an Instagram account. And, before they knew it, they became an internet sensation and the It fashion couple.

Reef is the one who styles and clicks the couple and posts these fashion inspo pictures on their account. This also makes for a friendly reminder for people to not abandon their clothes in a laundry shop. In the caption of the Insta photos, he writes, “These old clothes have been abandoned by customers at the laundry for years. Owners of the laundry store, Wanji and Sho-Er who are over 80 years old. Grandson just can’t bear to see them overwhelmed with bore everyday. So, ask them to reinterpret fashion, hoping to let everyone know that age is not a barrier to have fun in fashion and even old clothings can transformed into trendy outfits! ?A friendly reminder|Don’t forget to pick up your laundry.”

In an interview with CNN, Wan-Ji expressed his disbelief regarding the love and appreciation they have received from the fashion lovers worldwide. “I didn’t think people would like it.” He  also shared that he was dicey about the whole thing and wondered “Will anybody want to look at this?” Glad that his grandson took the plunge and we got an Instagram page that’s nothing short of a leaf out of a street style section from a high-end fashion magazine.

Reef Chang told CNN, “Grandpa loves wearing a suit because he wants people to see that he washes and irons clothes properly. He thinks that if we are running a laundromat but look dirty, then no one will come in. He thinks it shows his professionalism, so he insists on wearing an ironed suit.” He also shared how his grandma Sho-Er was quite a fashionista in her times. “When my grandma was young, she was a fashionable girl. There are two wardrobes full of her old clothes, and the style is similar to that of the female stars of her generation. But now, she is more concerned that the clothes are comfortable.” Sho-Er told CNN, “Knowing that people still like me makes it feel like I have more grandsons and granddaughters,” she said. How very sweet of her!

They are hands down the coolest and most fashionable couple I know who are pulling off street style and chic clothes with so much ease in their 80s. Not only that, their Instagram account is also a proof that we could certainly manage with old and limited clothes lying in our wardrobe by experimenting with different styles and reinterpret fashion in our own way.

You don’t always need brand new clothes to look amazingly fashionable. Here is a living proof of that!
