5 Innovative Styles And Trends That Caught Our Eye At The FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week 2021
This season’s fashion week was different in a lot of ways. The phygital concept, seasonless ideology, collaboration of two fashion weeks into one big fashion frenzy and the focus of sustainability are some of the features that FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week brought in this year. Most of these changes were simply the upshots of the pandemic which basically changed fashion in the past year. Obviously then, the collections were also largely inspired by the altered lifestyle and preferences post-Covid. Designers incorporated their design sensibilities into the breezy styles and silhouettes to cater to the pandemic-struck fashion folks who now prioritise comfort over anything else. Also, although the fashion show was seasonless, the spring and summer worthy prints, patterns and styles ruled the ramp where flora and fauna dominated the aesthetics.
However, what we absolutely loved from the 5-day fashion extravaganza this season was some of the most innovative and refreshing trends that debuted on the runway. Apart from the usual garment galore that we see every season, the designers truly one-upped this year by introducing refreshing and never-seen before styles in both bridal couture and resort wear. These include a debut of Indian athleisure category, a heady mix of design patterns, use of 3D retro graphic aesthetics and much more. Here we have listed down all the refreshingly innovative looks and breakout styles that stood out for us from the FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week.

Indian Athleisure

Designer Payal Singhal explored a new trend style by melding two coveted fashion categories namely athleisure and ethnic wear. The one thing every Indian woman complains about donning a lehenga or any traditional wear is how bulky and weighty, and sometimes, quite un-functional it is. This season, the PS brand doled out a range of comfier, practical and sporty silhouettes in Indian wear. From a lehenga skirt paired with a knitted bomber jacket and crop top to joggers teamed with a top and flirty, floral shrug, we saw a whole bunch of interesting Indian wear styles with an athleisure twist.

Pankaj and Nidhi’s collection was all about hope and optimism and they tried to reflect it with iridescent colours, prints and the 3D geometric patterns that they employed in the clothes. Cool WFH tops, swimsuits styled with light blazers and whimsical workwear were some of the standouts from the show. The collection was incredibly fun and radiated the ‘positive vibes only’ philosophy with the vibrant colour scheme and holographic embroidery.
Eccentric Sarees

Sarees are not longer subject to conventional drapes. Giving an interesting spin to these traditional and timeless pieces and bringing them to the more contemporary side of the style spectrum, Cocccon showcased innovative and creative saree styles with effortless drape, one-sleeve statement blouses and quirky and whimsical prints. These sarees were super stylish and made from biodegradable materials, making the collection more impactful and noteworthy.

Sequins, shimmer and silver; this was a classic Manish Malhotra number. However, there were a thing or two in the showstopper outfit that made for attention-grabbing details. Let’s talk about the fuss-free, attached dupatta style, first. Although it has a long trail ending in a flock of feathers, we think it makes the outfit extremely easy to manage. Next, we loved the exquisite bodysuit-style cut-out bodice that is unconventional and chic for an Indian wear outfit. Someone on social media mentioned how it looks like the swimsuit version of the lehenga, and we can’t stop thinking about it.

The opening show by Anamika Khanna featured a spectacular collection which used a blend of different art and textiles and designing aesthetics into the garments. Fringes, patchwork, pockets, yokes, tassels, embroidery and prints, Anamika Khanna’s show saw an array of different designs and artwork into the looks, making them versatile, avant garde and apt for mix-and-match styling. We particularly loved this one look with a floor-length jacket with an equal mix of playful patterns, colours and designs.
