This Gentle Exfoliating Toner Is Changing Zahra’s Skin

Honestly, I’ve never been a big believer in toners. Until two years ago, I barely even had a proper skincare routine. Things changed after Hauterfly launched and I had a renewed interest in all things beauty — specifically, skincare.

As you grow older, you realise the importance of a good skincare routine when you start spotting fine lines, and age spots that stubbornly refuse to fade. So apart from investing in better quality, skin-loving products and reading ingredients lists with a keener eye, I’ve also started adding products to my arsenal that I wasn’t using before. Like toners.

Remember those astringent, alcohol-infused toners from your teenage years that did nothing for your skin except dry it out and burn it into oblivion? Modern day toners are far more gentle — and effective — and contain active ingredients that address specific issues. They also remove debris like oil or makeup, smoothen the skin’s surface, and prep your skin for anti-ageing treatments and serums. So yeah, I’m a total believer in the benefit of toners now.

The newest toner I’ve added to my skincare routine is British beauty brand Pixi’s cult product — the Glow Tonic. And I now know why it’s been getting rave reviews from from beauty-obsessed women all over the world.

The Glow Tonic claims to give you brighter, tighter, firmer skin with regular use, and here’s why it’s so effective. Enriched with 5% glycolic acid — a natural derivative of sugarcane, and a member of the alpha-hydroxy acid family — this gentle exfoliating formula dissolves the bonds binding dullness-inducing dead cells from your skin’s surface, allowing new, healthy skin to shine through.

It also contains aloe vera that soothes and hydrates your skin, red ginseng that promotes cell health, witch hazel that firms and tones — all working overtime to give you a fresh, clean, smooth, and glowing complexion.

Now let’s talk about how it’s helped my skin this past month. Firstly, my pores. They look cleaner, less clogged, and therefore, smaller. My skin looks smoother and more youthful. I’m finding less need to put on layers of makeup to hide blemishes or redness, because both have shown visible signs of improvement. Hormonal acne has also reduced, and I find my skin producing less oil than usual.

I’ve been using it every alternate night by applying a few drops on a cotton wool pad and sweeping it all over my skin after cleansing; the thing about using acid-based products is to allow your skin to build tolerance for them over a short period, before using them every night, or even twice a day.

One very important thing to remember when you start including any kind of acid in your skincare: NEVER FORGOT TO SLATHER ON THE SUNSCREEN. Seriously, ladies: this one is non-negotiable. Your skin gets photosensitive when you use AHAs, BHAs, or retinols, so it’s doubly-important to put on sunscreen everyday.

Suitable for all skin types, Pixi Glow Tonic is alcohol-free, and the hydrating formula really does work to put the glow back into your skin naturally — no highlighters needed!
