Zahra Is Really Digging This New Multi-Purpose Pigment

Zahra Is Really Digging This New Multi-Purpose Pigment

Remember how I was raving about Canadian brand Cover FX’s rad new innovation, Custom Cover Drops, last year? Well, this year, American beauty brand Clinique has come out with a similar product, and if you’re as much of a skincare and makeup junkie as me, you should definitely check it out.

Clinique’s BIY™ Blend It Yourself Pigment Drops only recently hit the shelves, and here’s what makes it so cool. The product is pure liquid pigment that you can mix with your favourite moisturiser, serum, or primer, to create a custom-blended tinted moisturiser using just one drop. If you prefer more coverage, you can add 3-4 drops of this stuff to your moisturiser for more opacity. My favourite way to use this is to mix it with my sunscreen, which gives it the perfect amount of medium tint when I’m not in the mood for full-coverage foundation.

Densely pigmented, BIY comes in 6 different shades, and is a fluid-thin formula (a silicone emollient mix) that blends easily with your moisturiser or sunscreen without changing the texture. Just give the bottle a good shake and add drops as per your requirement. The bottle is also small, which makes it perfect for throwing into your travel kit or your beach bag while on vacay.

Now, if I’m being completely honest, Clinique’s BIY scores higher than Cover FX in two main departments, i.e. 1) the packaging, and 2) the price.

The plastic bottle is tiny and has a needle-nose tip, which makes it more convenient and a lot less messy to use than the Custom Cover Drops glass bottle with a dropper. Then there’s the price: while Cover FX’s product costs a whopping 4k, Clinique’s is *relatively* cheaper at almost 3k. However, you’re getting a lot less product per ounce with Clinique — and at 10 ml it’s not a lot of product — so you might want to keep that in mind when you’re checking out both products in store.

The only other downside I have with this product is the limited shade range. While internationally BIY comes in 12 shades, only 6 of those shades have made it to India. What’s more, the darkest in the range isn’t really all that dark, so I’m not sure what that’s about. In comparison, Custom Cover Drops comes in 24 (yes, 24 shades!) so you’re bound to find something that fits your skin tone. Be sure to get a blended colour-match in the store though, so you don’t end up buying one that’s too light for you.

If you like full coverage, this isn’t the product for you. However, if you’re looking for a great sheer foundation that works perfectly for summer, be sure to check this out.

Think of it like your very own custom-blend BB or CC cream, but better!
