Face Oils 101: Why You Need To Start Using One STAT
When you’ve spent half your life battling that perennially slick feeling, the thought of using an oil on your face is nothing short of horrifying. Obviously, I met this growing trend of using face oils with zero enthusiasm since this could only suit dry-skinned folks. Right? Apparently not. Oils can actually stabilise and regulate hyper active sebaceous glands and help get rid of acne.
Seems like my entire life is a lie. After meticulously eliminating every oil-based product I’m now being nudged to slather my face with oil? Well yes, because face oils have a host of benefits which include:
1. Protection From Free Radicals
Many botanical oils like argan and passion fruit are potent antioxidants. You might need as few as two drops of the oil. Massage it into clean skin, wait for five mintues to let your skin soak it in, and then apply your foundation as usual.
2. Reduces inflammation
Many anti-aging ingredients like retinoids, for example, make the skin irritable and sensitive. Using an oil can soothe the skin. Argan, borage seed and yangu oils help reduce inflammation.
3. Plumps the skin
As your skin ages, its natural oils decrease and the moisture barrier breaks down making your skin feel dried out. Using an oil before your regular moisturiser helps because most oils are lipophilic (meaning fat loving). They seep through the lipid layer with ease, prevent dehydration, and plump up the skin with moisture.
4. Aids absorption
Because they can penetrate the skin deeper, oils help active ingredients like retinol, glycolic acid, and vitamin C to seep deep into the skin without irritating the surface.
