How Adult Relationships Are Basically Like Playing Ghar Ghar

Remember how as young kids we used to get together with our gali ke friends, and play ghar ghar? In case you didn’t ever pretend to be mummy or daddy going for grocery runs, and scolding the plumber for doing a shoddy job, let me tell you, it’s a legit game. We would watch our parents run the household, and during play time, try to imitate that. It was the most fun! For a couple of hours every day, we would pretend to be grown ups. Secretly, we couldn’t wait to grow older and do all these things for real.

And then, we grew older. We got jobs like grown ups, and started paying taxes. We bought stuff, and collected EMIs. And, we fell in love (or not), and got into relationships. We should be thrilled about all of this – after all, our childhood aspirations have come true! Instead, we crib and complain about the daily grind. We think our humdrum existence is antithetical to the romance we sought as kids, and now, as grown ups. But, guess what? We’re still playing ghar ghar, at least when it comes to our relationships!

Just as when we were kids, we are still completely clueless about what we are doing! We may be legit girlfriends, wives, or mothers, but honestly, how man of us can truly claim that we know what we are doing? Relationships are hit-and-trial, and you learn on the job. In a sense, we are still practising how to be good partners.

Like we did when we played ghar ghar, we sometimes create problems that may not be as real or as serious as we make them out to be. Our monkey minds just need something to stay occupied with, and when all else fails, we create drama. Drama… isn’t that what the game was all about?

Nowhere is this similarity true more than when we live with someone. When we share a house with a partner, we are, quite literally, playing house. We cook, we clean, we decorate, we haggle with maids and electricians… all the things we pretended to do as young children.

The one thing we don’t do, is have fun with it, and this is what the grown up version of our favourite childhood game makes us feel like our lives are too boring. You know how they say that we need to keep our inner child alive? Why not do this even when it comes to this?

Seen it all?

We’ve got more!
