Will 2015 Go Down In History As The Year Of The “Naked Dress”?
When fashion heavy-hitters like Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez took to the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala red carpet – often touted as the Oscars of American fashion – in May this year, it was safe to say that no one was actually talking about their gowns. Their nearly-naked looks left very little to the imagination, speaking volumes for the stars’ sheer body confidence instead.
While J-Lo wore a beaded red Versace that virtually had no sides, Kim donned a sequinned, feather-tailed white Roberto Cavalli dress that clung to her famous derrière. And in her quest for maximum exposure, Queen Bey trotted down in a barely-there Givenchy gown sparsely embroidered with strategically placed crystals.
As former Elle India editor-in-chief Nonita Kalra then wrote, “Fashion’s newest trend can only be compared to “The Emperor’s New Clothes”. Essentially the aim of the outfit is to bare all, leaving nothing to the imagination. So, breasts are left hanging out. The derrière is hardly covered. And everything else is clearly on display. This season’s style preference makes Angelina Jolie’s thigh-high slit seem tame in comparison.”
