You Won’t Believe What Julia Roberts Did On The Cannes Red Carpet!
I don’t think I’m the only girl in love with Julia Roberts. And she just gave me and millions more another reason to fall in love with her again. While attending the premiere of her new movie Money Monster, she took to the red carpet looking like the gorgeous Hollywood leading lady that she is.
Wearing a striking black off-the-shoulder Armani Privé gown, she looked like a vision in her signature wavy locks and a glittering Chopard diamond and emerald drop necklace. Everything was picture perfect until she lifted her gown to climb up the steps leading up to the main theatre.
Lo and behold, there she was, walking up the steps without any shoes. The actress had just walked the most famous red carpet in the world BAREFOOT!
So why exactly is this such a big deal?
Cannes’ governing body has firm fashion rules about what can and cannot be worn on the red carpet, and one of them is a strict ‘heels only’ policy. In fact, this same policy created quite a stir last year, after various female attendees were asked to leave screenings or not allowed on the red carpet for not wearing appropriate heels. Famously dubbed “Flatgate”, the incidents caused quite a furor with many actors speaking up against the rule in 2015.
This year, even more actresses are taking a stand against the unequal wardrobe guidelines at the festival. “Things have to change immediately. It has become really obvious that if [a man and I] were walking the red carpet together and someone stopped me and said, ‘Excuse me, young lady, you’re not wearing heels. You cannot come in.’ Then [I’m going to say], ‘Neither is my friend. Does he have to wear heels?’ It can work both ways. It’s just like you simply cannot ask me to do something that you are not asking him. I get the black-tie thing but you should be able to do either version—flats or heels,” Kristen Stewart said at a roundtable for her new film, Café Society.
However, in her act of complete rebellion, Roberts proved to be THE badass feminist icon of all time by skipping footwear altogether. In your face, Cannes Film Festival!
All we can say is, “Slay, woman, SLAY!”
