‘Raped By Harvey Weinstein at 21 At Cannes,’ Says Asia Argento

The Cannes Film Festival is known for being a showcase of all things extraordinary, in films and in fashion. Red carpet appearances, film screenings, beauty brand, it all happens here. But this year, Cannes will be remembered for much more. At the closing ceremony on Saturday, before the award for the Best Actress was handed out, Asia Argento took a moment to voice her anger against the predatory behaviour of Harvey Weinstein.

The actress said that Cannes was the producer’s ‘hunting ground’, and that she was raped by Harry at the festival in 1997 when she was 21 years old. “I want to make a prediction,” she added. “Harvey Weinstein will never be welcomed here ever again. He will live in disgrace shunned by a film community that once embraced him and covered up for his crimes.”

Harvey Weinstein has been accused of several cases of sexual misconduct, but the remarks by Asia were unexpected, with the organisers unaware that she was going to make any comments. The producer has been called out previously for being a sexual predator and allegations against him led to the #MeToo movement in October 2017.
