Indu Malhotra Sworn In As Supreme Court Judge

You are all excited. It’s Friday, after all. Allow me to sprinkle a little rain on your parade. We have been independent for 67 years. Yes, that long. And for these many years, we have only had 7 women judges in the Supreme Court. We are doing spectacularly well on the women’s equality front from the looks of it. We are talking about this because senior lawyer Indu Malhotra, 61, has been administered oath of office by Chief Justice Dipak Misra today.

Now if you think the numbers were a little disappointing for women, get this. Indu is the first, we repeat FIRST, women lawyer to be directly elevated to the position of a Supreme Court judge. The other six women have moved up to the Supreme Court from the High Court.

Indu was administered the oath by CJI Dipak Misra. The lawyer was one of the names recommended by a collegium made up of a group of top judges. The other name was of Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph. His name was rejected by the government.

In this article by The Quint, the publication puts out statistics about women judges. We have 2 women judges among 25 Supreme Court Judges.

Yes, we are also shaking our heads. But hey, let’s hope this appointment is the start of something great.

Seen it all?

We’ve got more!
