Here’s Why Aretha Franklin, The Queen Of Soul, Will Live With Us Forever!
It’s not often that you come across a woman that inspires and demands respect in equal measure. For the lovers of music or anyone with an appreciation for music, the loss of Aretha Franklin marked the end of an era. The iconic singer passed away at the age of 76, ending a long-winded battle with sickness.
Her song, Respect became the battle cry of everyone who was unheard. Her music cut across borders, income groups, race and gender. She was a powerful voice in music, but also in the world of feminism. She wore the crown of being a feminist icon quite awkwardly, though. In 2014, she said, “I don’t think I was a catalyst for the women’s movement. Sorry. But if I were? So much the better.”
She leaves behind a fantastic legacy. One that will be hard to replicate. She had her fears, and her emotional upheavals left her scarred, but her music continued to inspire. Aretha was fiercely private, keeping her failing health and many emotional traumas away from the public eye. But her music never faltered. Her songs inspired women everywhere. She was cheeky in that the lyrics in her melodies were often telling.
In 2015, she took to the stage and in dramatic fashion, whisked away her cape. A move that has been seen as her peeling off her layers. Letting the world see a side of her that was, perhaps, vulnerable.

That she will be missed would be an understatement. She leaves a void. Barack Obama says it best in his tribute, “Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade — our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace.”
