Asaram Gets Convicted In 2013 Rape Case. Let’s Heave a Sigh Of Relief!

Perhaps what is most telling about this case is that articles referring to this man have dropped the colloquial term ‘Bapu’, which means father, when referring to Asaram. Today, in what is a welcome verdict, Asaram, a self-proclaimed godman, has been convicted of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl in the outskirts of Jodhpur.

This is a man who is 77 years old. When most people are spending time with books and laughing clubs in their colony, Asaram has been spending time in jail for the multiple cases of sexual assault against him. He has been in jail since 2013. This self-styled ‘godman’, a term used very, very loosely here, faces upto 10 years of imprisonment under the  Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. However, the quantum of sentence is still to be announced.

The verdict was welcomed by the family of the rape survivor. The father said, “Asaram is convicted, we have got justice. I want to thank everyone who supported us in this fight. Now I hope he will get strict punishment. I also hope the witnesses who were murdered or kidnapped get justice.”

Just to put things into perspective, Asaram has applied for bail 12 times till date. It has been rejected each time by the court. Also, over the last 4 years, at least 9 witnesses have been attacked, out of which 3 have died.

Things are looking very, very tough for Asaram. In the current scenario, no one is in a mood to forgive and he could be the example that the powers that be will need to set.

Update: Asaram has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape of a minor.
