Anushka Nadia Menon: “Your Instincts Are Never Wrong”
Among the most sought-after fashion photographers in the country, Anushka Nadia Menon boasts an enviable portfolio of big name brands, celebrities, and designers. Raised in Muscat, Oman, she moved to Australia in 2002 to study Art Design at RMIT Melbourne followed by photography. She moved to Delhi soon after and worked her way up to become one of India’s best-known female photographers. Her distinctive futuristic work can be seen in national and international publications such as Vogue, UCE, Pastaiga, Glamour, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, Femina and Verve, among others. The award-winning shutterbug is also known for her edgy fashion choices, with a sartorial sensibility that’s as distinctive as her work. Anushka also has a DJ avatar — Anu$hka + AGENT — where she experiments with hip-hop, trap and electronica, and packs a serious punch with her punk-rock personality!
1. Trust your gut
Your instincts are usually never wrong; they may be overwhelming at times and not something you want to surrender to, but listen to them and believe that they will guide you through the situation you are in. I’ve always had this bad habit of doing the exact opposite of what my gut is telling me and have learned the hard way!
2. Learn to let go
Letting go is probably one of the hardest things to do, but the younger you start the better you will get at it. And when you’re older, the process will be so much easier. Learn to let the past go, that way you can move forward stronger and clearer. Learn to let relationships go when they no longer give you happiness and security.
3. Keep in touch with your spiritual side
If you have faith in a higher power, it will surely be a strength to you. The daily practice of prayer and meditation is soothing to the body and mind and teaches you discipline and patience.
4. Choose your friends wisely
Being popular and having many friends is meaningless. You will truly only have a handful of real friends, and they are the ones you need to care for and love unconditionally. Everyone else is just passing by. You will see who your real friends when you are at your lowest; they will be the ones around to pick you up.
5. Always speak your truth
Don’t be shy or polite about speaking your truth. If you believe in something, stand up for it and see it through. Be honest with others, and most importantly, be honest with yourself.
6. It’s ok to say NO
This is where your gut feeling will play a role. If you feel even slightly uncomfortable about a situation, say NO. If it’s something you don’t want to do, say NO. If you feel pressured or rushed, say NO. It’s ok!
7. Take care of your body, it’s your temple
Your body is your temple. It belongs to you and no one else, so worship it, love it, nurture it, respect it, and enjoy it! Eat healthy; it will show in the way your skin glows. Exercise and stay fit; this will result in you being active and staying in shape, and help you as you age.
8. Learn new languages
Especially if you live in a country where you don’t speak the language! Learn languages that excite you and can benefit you when you travel.
9. Read more
This will open your mind in ways you didn’t know was possible. Knowledge is such a powerful tool. Reading will help you communicate better and also understand things more clearly.
10. Lose your insecurities
They will never be of use to you. They will only stop you from growing and living your life to your full potential. It’s not easy, but keep working at it one at a time. This will open doors to opportunities of self-exploration.
