Jessica Jones is the first female superhero to get a TV show! Marvel’s feminist detective, Jessica Jones, is a mature and grown woman who is suffering from PTSD and runs her own detective agency. The show deals with sexual assault and casual sexism, and how the protagonist with superhuman strength deals with it.

2. GRACE AND FRANKIE

It is a story about an unlikely friendship between Grace and Frankie after their respective husbands announce that they are in love, and plan to get married soon. Older women in Hollywood are underrated and underpaid and this show is groundbreaking for all those reasons and more. It is a thought-provoking and unabashedly feminist show that everyone should binge on.

3. ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK

OITNB is an American comedy-drama Netflix original about Piper Kerman, who becomes an activist after serving 13 months in prison for drug money laundering. This show is slowly turning into a classic feminism show. The women in the show do not apologise for being themselves and being ‘in-your-face’ feminist. If you haven’t watched it yet, it’s high time you start!

4. GLOW

This comedy-drama is about the female wrestlers in the 80s. Most women who were trying to become actresses or stuntwomen ended up joining the female wrestling team. The show is feminist right from the beginning, and even showcases the characters’ self-doubts where they try to find their ‘wrestling personas’.

5. THE CROWN

Who doesn’t know the story of Queen Elizabeth? The crown is based on the life of the present queen of England who, at the age of 25, had to sit on the throne and make decisions regarding her country’s safety and welfare. It shows the work-life balance of the Queen, and how, like every other woman, she has her ups and downs, but nevertheless rises up against all odds, making her a force to be reckoned with.

6. THE SINNER

The show is based on a novel by Petra Hammesfahr. Jessica Biel plays the role of Cora Tannetti, a mother who commits an act of violence without having a clue as to why she did it. Such shows with a complicated female character were not acceptable say 10 years ago. But the viewers are hungry for good shows, and The Sinner is both new and bold.

7. SEEING ALLRED

Seeing Allred is the Netflix documentary based on the feminist lawyer, Gloria Allred. Throughout her career spanning more than thirty years, she has fought patriarchy, and this show captures her fight against patriarchy and is a must–watch!

8. TALLULAH

Tallulah is a comedy-drama movie released worldwide on Netflix. The story talks about the dark side of motherhood and a woman’s re-introduction to femininity and the concept of being a mother. The movie was praised all over the world and is something that everyone should watch.

9. THE OA

The show centres around a young woman who reappears after being declared missing for 7 years. She can now see, despite being blind at the time of her disappearance. This young woman refuses to tell the FBI or her adoptive parents the mystery of her disappearance and her eyesight, and she gathers a team of high school students with an aim to save other missing people.

10. ONE DAY AT A TIME

One of the most progressive shows, this one has a female lead who is a lesbian. It is the story of a Latin family, living in Los Angeles, and each episode revolves around issues like sexism, immigration, and being a veteran. It is not only empowering, but hilarious as well.

11. REBELLION

This Netflix miniseries is a show that revolves around three young women from diverse families. It talks about how some prioritise their loyalty to family, and how some are motivated by ideals and opportunism.
