The Leather Espadrilles Zahra Will Be Wearing All Summer
The quintessential summer shoe, espadrilles have rather humble beginnings. These flat, rope-soled shoes date back to 13th century Spain and have evolved into something of a universal staple for warm weather. And with all things Spanish — think fiery red hues, Flamenco-inspired ruffles and flounces, jute-heel wedges — being the flavour of the season, there’s no better time than now to add a fun pair of espadrilles to your summer shoe collection.
While international brands have given the humble shoe all sorts of unexpected luxe trimmings for SS16 — be it leather patchwork and studding at Valentino, embroidered denim at Stella McCartney, rich brocade at Etro or stone embellishments at Jimmy Choo — if you’re a city girl like me, you’re bound to be looking for a pair that’s not only comfortable to walk around in all day, but also has something of a fashionable edge to it.
So while I was browsing Zara’s mid-season sale bang in the middle of Lakme Fashion Week last week, I chanced upon these blush pink babies and I have to admit it was love at first sight. The neutral colour means it goes with everything — be it cropped denims, midi skirts, mini dresses, or cut-off shorts — and the pretty star-shaped leather embellishments with beads adds the right amount of interest. They’re easy to dress up or dress down and can take you from the beach to the sidewalk with minimal updates. What’s more, they’re SUPER comfortable and the soft leather feels just like butter on your skin.
One of the things that make espadrilles the go-to summer shoes is the jute sole. Jute is a natural fibre that stays cool in hot temperatures, making it the ideal material for footbeds. What’s more, because they’re made with soft and flexible fabrics like cotton canvas or leather, they’re easy to throw into a weekend bag for a staycation or a beach bag for your favourite seaside jaunt. What’s more, they have just the right amount of casual sophistication. Did someone say, “Caliente!”?
