#AskHauterfly: 3 Workwear Ideas For The Monsoon

Hey Team Hauterfly,

I am a website regular, and I wanted you to do a story around monsoon workwear clothing ideas. I travel by local trains and hate having mud-spattered clothes, so I’m struggling to figure what to wear. Dresses are a pain since the wind can be a challenge. Any inspiration will help!

I love Mumbai. It’s no exaggeration. There’s nothing I don’t love about this city. But even with all that adoration, I must confess that commuting to work during the monsoon season can be quite a pain. Take, for instance, getting into a local train wearing a just-ironed crisp shirt. But minutes later, I often feel like I’m suffering from short-term memory loss wondering if I actually ironed my shirt this morning or not.

Then there’s that inevitable scene of crossing the road to hail a cab, only to have a moving car splash dirty water from a puddle nearby and stain your clothes. And with my kind of luck, I’ve even had moments where I’m actually sitting inside a car and rolling the windows up when I get splashed by a car from the opposite side of the road! Oh, my stories of monsoon woes are many. So let me tell you Neeta, you have company. I feel your pain.

So to help you out, I’ve collated three looks that will help you get through any rainy day in Mumbai. Try it out and tell me if it works. And if you have more questions, you know who to ask!

Pencil Skirt Outfit_What To Wear In Monsoon_Hauterfly

1. A Pencil Skirt

Scroll through any fashionable working woman’s style book and you’ll know that the pencil skirt is a workwear essential. It’s chic, stylish, and perfect for the rains (meaning no chance of it blowing up in the wind!). Team it with a fun tee if your office environment is casual like that, else stick to the trusty button-down shirt or a slightly ruffled number to keep things feminine and classy.

2. A Dress With A Parka

Wearing a dress is a pain in the monsoon. But frankly, if you opt for something structured — like a shirtdress or a midi dress — you can steer clear of experiencing a Marilyn Monroe-esque moment. It’s a great idea to invest in waterproof raingear or an all-weather parka or even a funky raincoat. Also, monsoon footwear is a must-have.
