Word Of The Week_What Is Scalloped Hem_Hauterfly

The one garment detail I’ve found in surplus over the past few months across online stores is the scalloped hem. No surprise there, and credit should be given to the Spring/Summer 2016 runways, where everyone from Etro and Christian Dior to Ralph & Russo added it to their ensembles. And in no time, celebrities took to the trend as well. Stylists of Bollywood stars like Deepika Padukone and Kangana Ranaut made sure that their clients were noticed sporting the scalloped hem. And now, this statement detail has caught everyone’s fancy.

But what exactly is a scalloped hem? A detail of vintage clothing that gained popularity in the 50s, the scalloped hem is a pattern element on clothes. As the name suggests, the intricate design is made up of a series of curves (similar to the one noticed on the edge of a scallop’s shell) cut to form the hemline of a garment. This detail can also appear on the neckline or the peplum. The scalloped hemline works best on stiff fabrics made out of natural fibres like cotton, linen, silk dupioni, wool crepe and more, as opposed to jacquard and satin and other loosely-woven fabrics, as they help define the details in a better manner.

If you’re opting for a feminine look, a scalloped hem outfit is your best pick. Attain a cute 9-to-5 look by teaming a scalloped hem black skirt with a checked skirt and complete the look with a pair of ankle-strap heels. Off for a vacation? Pack a pair of scalloped hem shorts and team it with a tank top and flip flops. Get date-ready with a scalloped hem dress that you can pair with chic wedges too.
