Nicola Formichetti Decodes The Closet Essentials For Cool Girls
Nicola Formichetti isn’t just another designer or creative director. Uber stylish and completely avant-garde, he translates this unique aesthetic both in his creations for Italian denim brand Diesel and his personal style. If there is any Creative Director in the current crop of international names who has the pulse on the current millennials’ state-of-mind, it would probably have to be this man.
A social media influencer, Formichetti made his name as Lady Gaga’s former stylist, and has had stints with magazines like Dazed, Vogue Japan, and W as fashion director, followed by a brief tenure with Thierry Mugler, before taking over creative duties at Diesel in 2013. A prolific user of Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and Snapchat, Formichetti knows the cool end of things better than most. He is what you’d truly call a fashion zeitgeist — innovative, ballsy, and everything edgy and cool.
In an email interview with Hauterfly, Formichetti decodes the season’s trends, fashion essentials for women, and everything about Diesel’s latest Spring Summer 2017 collection.
What’s the inspiration behind Diesel’s SS17 collection?
The collection was inspired by Miami. It’s a place I’ve always admired for its art, culture, Art Deco architecture, and beach lifestyle. We have the Pelican Hotel there too, so it’s a part of history. It’s all around the idea of the uplifting, 80s pop colours that I find every time I visit there. I so wish the entire world was like Miami during summer. SS ’17 is all about a high-energy cocktail of pastel tones, Memphis styling, and pool party atmosphere.
What are your favourite pieces from the collection?
I love the pieces on which we collaborated with Japanese graphic designer Yoko Honda, which also draws on the 80s, including swimwear in nostalgic palm tree prints and good-time beach graphics.

What are the current trends in womenswear?
Obviously, denim! Not just jeans, but denim skirt, shirts, jackets. Denim never goes out of trend.

What are the key things to keep in mind when you’re buying denims?
Find your fit, know your fit, and stick to it. But sometimes, dare to change things up!
How would you define your personal style statement?
That’s very difficult to say. It’s really about feeling good in what you wear, and always add a touch of fun. I don’t want to take myself too seriously.
What do you think makes a woman sexy?
I don’t think fashion makes people sexy. It’s all in the attitude.
