7 Fashion Rules That Plus-Size Girls Should Ruthlessly Break!

Some rules are meant to be broken, and fashion rules definitely need to be trashed. In all honesty, fashion is a form of self-expression — the key term being “self” — so who are other people to decide what you should wear?

In a world where dos and don’ts are set by “experts” other than yourself, it can be pretty difficult to feel comfortable. Over the years, certain fashion rules have somehow become the norm — if you’re too skinny, too chubby, too short, too tall — the list is long!

If you’re a curvy girl, then you know how these rules sometimes make you feel like an outcast. Don’t wear this, don’t wear that, this will make you look slim, that will make you look bigger — yeah, been there done that!

And your Eureka! moment happens when you ask yourself, ‘Who the fuck are these people making the rules?’ That’s when you know that this so-called fashion Bible lies in Narnia, and it’s high time we break ’em. And although there are possibly a thousand fashion commandments being dictated, here are the 7 most ridiculous rules and why you should break them STAT.

1. You shouldn’t be wearing minis. They show-off your cellulite.

Minis are meant to show skin. Cellulite is part of your skin, so umm… why shouldn’t you? If you’re afraid of wearing anything short just because your cellulite might look ugly, think again. At most, make a design game out of it if someone makes you conscious of it. Trust us, they’ll be even more awkward.

2. Bodycons will make you look fatter.

Your body, your choice. The moment your confidence dips, you lose control over that choice. Bodycons, as a matter of fact, are empowering, so give them the power to do so. Your fat isn’t a secret, so why not flaunt it?

3. Crop tops will show off your tummy.

Yes, they are meant to do that. Just because your tummy isn’t flat, doesn’t mean it cannot be flaunted. If you want a dip in this dangerously sexy pool and are afraid, pair your crops with high-waisted trousers. This way, you will gain the confidence to pull off a sexy crop top without feeling shy!

4. Horizontal Stripes don’t work on your body type.

Stripes are comfort, and don’t you let anyone take that away — horizontal or vertical. No matter where you wear them, or how you wear them, there isn’t a moment where they won’t seem flattering on your body!

5. Layers will make you look fatter.

Wearing layers will just add to your style quotient, not your size. Layering prints, colours, and fabrics just makes fashion more fun, and why should slim people only be allowed to have fun?

6. Printed bottoms will bring too much attention.

Printed bottoms are bae. They’re funky, they’re quirky, and they add a whole lot of vibrancy to every look. Whether you choose to wear it as shorts, trousers, or a skirt, printed bottoms are the perfect partner in crime when you want to make a fashionable splash. Go crazy!

7. Peplum will make your torso look wider.

Peplum-styled clothes are meant to give that extra oomph to your body, and who DOESN’T need that? Peplums are trendy and can be styled with everything, so honestly don’t deprive yourself just because “they” say so!
