LFW 2016: Hue, Shimmer & Crystals At Nikhil Thampi
A Nikhil Thampi show is one that is designer-trademarked, you’d know it if you’ve watched his past seasons. The designer, who is known for his take on modern separates and structured clothing, has a signature style that makes it difficult for one to detach it from (or not compare it to) his past collections.
Minus the fact that it was a jam-packed show (and extremely chaotic right before the start), what added to the elements were the dramatised walk of models who were done up using brilliantly elaborate make-up and hairstyling. Models strut the ramp holding large props that were like lighted full-length mirrors. It was a spectacle, so to say. The show-stopping Illuminate collection was segmented into three themes: Shimmer, Hue, and Crystal.
Thampi’s line titled Quantum revolved around a colour story that started off with earthy tones like white, beige, black and in time made way for jewel shades of deep green, red, blue and tangerine. One distinct feature was the asymmetry of hemlines, as was the constant embellishment using sparkling metallic details placed to link the slashed panels on garments. From pantsuits to multi-slit skirts and dresses, cropped tops and halter blouses, slim dresses with high slits and more, it was all about garments that were structured yet stylish and feminine. And no doubt, the phenomenal hair and make-up ensured that this show was all drama.
