Rohit Bal Wraps Up LFW 2016 With a Stunning Grand Finale!
After five days full of great collections at Lakme Fashion Week Summer Resort 2016 — where garments predisposed subtle and simple yet summery themes — Rohit Bal turned everything on its head at the grand finale, giving minimalists plenty of reason to convert to the ostentatious side of the spectrum. I guess that’s what happens when you’re a design veteran with a very specific aesthetic; throughout the 30-minute showing, he displayed why he’s a master of his craft.
The who’s who of the fashion industry made their way from the St.Regis Hotel to St. Xavier’s College in peak traffic for the off-site show, and we couldn’t help but wonder what sartorial prowess awaited us at the closing show after a physically taxing five-day stint. But once the show started, there was no doubting what a spectacle it was to be. The graphics and lighting — that were cast on the monumental premise — were in tandem with the designer’s regal collection titled Koroshini (meaning “to illuminate”) and worked as a perfect dramatic backdrop for the show.
Handloom mulmuls, handspun silks, chanderi and rich silk velvet in bright hues that ranged from sunset gold, royal blue to ivory were tuned into stunning traditional, heavily detailed ensembles that comprised of lehenga cholis, long jackets, anarkalis, saris, and sherwanis. Apart from handmade cutwork and lattice, the designer also worked well with crafts like shibori hand crinkling (one we’ve seen him use in his past 2013 bridal collection as well) and organic dyes.
Kareena Kapoor Khan — the face of title sponsor Lakme — was the showstopper and walked the ramp in a chand motif royal blue lehenga that was exquisite in its detailing. All in all, it was a show befitting the grand finale and looked more like a luxurious celebration from the house of Rohit Bal. Bravo!
