#AskHauterfly: The 10 Most Googled Beauty Questions Of 2015

The year 2015 has been a very satisfying one for hair and beauty. We’ve seen some major trends like bold brows and winged-tip eyeliner that we’ve carried forward from the year before and a whole lot of new ones to play around with. What do I say, the more the merrier! I think everyone knows the drill when a new trend is the talk of the town. You simply Google it. Do you remember life before Google? Nah, me neither. A mainstay on everyone’s smartphones, Google releases the most trending questions each year, and here are the 10 Most Googled Beauty Questions of 2015. Why am I not surprised that No. 1 is Kardashian-related?

1. How to do the Kylie Jenner lip challenge

I was rather annoyed by the furore over Kylie Jenner’s lips, but the #KylieJennerLipChallenge — which literally took over social media for a good few months — was and continues to be a dangerous way to channel Kylie’s (in)famous pout. The lip-plumping technique involves putting your lips in a shot glass and sucking in to create a sort of suction on the lips. When you pull the shot glass off it plumps up your lips, only for a little while though. I remember doing this as a child with my brother, using a glass and pretending to be a duck before getting a firing from mum thanks to the bruised chins we’d have later. Hey I’m a millennial, so don’t judge. We entertained ourselves without iPads back then, ok?

2. What are lip fillers

Fuller lips have been the ideal in beauty for a while now, so this isn’t surprising. But the renewed interest can be credited to the youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan. Lips have been BIG this year, but let’s admit that the whole overlining routine is too cumbersome and would quite embarrassing were it to come off in the midst of a meal or a makeout session. Lip fillers aren’t such a big deal anymore. Pumping hyaluronic acid into your lips is quick, cheap, safe, and lasts for six to nine months. And no, you don’t have to go OTT like Kylie.

3. How to remove gel nail polish

The deal with gel nails is that they look fabulous, you don’t have to worry about chipping for weeks, but removing them is quite a pain and is best left to experts. Control your first instinct to peel it off and book yourself an appointment to remove them as it requires some serious soaking in pure acetone.

4. How to remove acrylic nails at home

We are all for DIYs, folks. But acrylics, gels, and the works need expert help. You could take it off using acetone meant especially for gel and/or acrylic nails, but unlike a nail technician you might just scrape off your natural nails along with the acrylics. Not a pleasant thought. Hit up your local nail salon STAT.

5. How to use beard balm

Having grown up with a bearded father, I’ve been on Team Beard way before beards were a thing. However, what I’m really loving right now (besides more men taking the plunge) is the “caring for the beard” revolution. Seriously guys, beard rashes are not fun. I recently gifted my pa the Ustraa Beard & Mooch Tonic, which he absolutely loved. And coming from him it’s a BIG deal. Check out their funny video on how to groom your beard.

6. How to do a French braid

Let’s face it: it’s a painful realisation that you could actually do all those ethereal braided hairstyles if only you knew how to do a French braid. After the three-strand, the French braid is the most basic braid that helps you style your hair in myriad ways. The possibilities are endless, no wonder it came in sixth on this list. Follow this tutorial to learn how to do it IRL. And remember, practise makes perfect.

7. How to pop a deep zit

My advice: DON’T. If it’s one of those pimples slowly rising under your skin and you want to stop it in its tracks, do this. However, if it’s cystic acne and the kind that’s deep, avoid messing with it and let a dermatologist handle it. Scarring is more difficult to deal with than zits.

8. How to get glowing skin

This evergreen question never runs out of favour. After all, who doesn’t want to shine like a 100-watt bulb? (Erm ok, but you get the drift.) Read our guide to strobing.

9. How to put braids in a bun

A big hair trend for 2015, braided buns can be styled in hundreds of ways. With all the brouhaha over Stars Wars and Princess Leia’s braided bun hairstyle right now, this is the right time to learn how to do it. Follow this tutorial for the easiest bun ever.

10. How to make your hair not staticky

Come winter and this is one of the most annoying issues ever. The easiest way to tame static is to push a dryer sheet through your brush and comb your hair with it to tame flyaways.
