The Cream That’s Helping Zahra Keep Breakouts In Check

I’m not boasting here, but I had perfectly flawless skin in my 20s. Acne was never a concern and I was blissfully unaware of the benefits of starting a good skincare regime early on in life. However, the minute I hit my 30s, I realised that this new decade brought with it a whole host of problems. Hormonal issues like PCOD became a mainstay and also affected my skin dramatically. Suddenly, the slightest hormonal change would cause my face to breakout and adult acne became a very real — and persistent — problem.

Being the skincare junkie that I am, I immediately started researching acne-busting lotions and potions that would make those unsightly red bumps and scars disappear overnight. Sadly, while some of them were effective, they created another issue altogether — the strong formulations often resulted in dry, flaking skin. My naturally oily skin was crying out for help, not only against the acne but also the products I was using to combat it. Now if that isn’t a double whammy problem, I don’t know what is! I had very nearly given up using anti-acne products until I recently discovered La Roche-Posay’s Effaclar Duo (+) Acne Treatment Cream.

I’ve written about my love for this French drugstore brand before, and there’s a damn good reason why I keep coming back to it for my skincare needs. Especially when it comes to treating minor issues that don’t require a trip to the dermat. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo (+) contains gold standard ingredients like Niacinamide and Procerad, as well as micro-exfoliating LHA and salicylic acid, which not only help to reduce the inflammation caused by acne, but also exfoliate dead skin cells, and even out your skin’s texture over time.

And ladies, it does exactly what it claims: I used it continuously for a little over a week and immediately noticed a difference. I was actually in the middle of a breakout when I started using it, and three days into the treatment my pimples were all but gone. A week in, and the marks had noticeably reduced too. What’s more, because the anti-acne ingredients are combined with hydrators, my skin wasn’t flaking.

The gel-cream formulation goes on smoothly, almost like a primer, and absorbs immediately. Depending on how severe your acne is, you can use it on your entire face or as a spot treatment. I reserve its use now only during breakouts (usually around the time I get my period when my hormones are acting crazy) as a spot treatment rather than an everyday moisturiser, and frankly, it works better for me that way. The fragrance-free formula works fast to prevent acne formation and lightens red or brown marks. Don’t go overboard applying it, though — especially around sensitive spots — as it may be slightly drying on some people.

So whether you’re dealing with blackheads, whiteheads, clogged pores, or blemishes, Effaclar Duo works really well to clear skin quickly and effectively. It’s a must-have product for your skincare cabinet, especially if you have oily, acne-prone skin.
