These Beauty Trends Are Going To Be BIG In 2016

2015 was the year of social media. For the first time in the history of fashion and beauty, it was social media that was setting trends as opposed to the ramps. So here’s a compilation of emerging trends that are growing in strength on social platforms and are expected to get bigger and better in the coming year. Here’s to a bolder and more beautiful 2016!

1. The Lob

It’s an established fact that 2015 was the year of the Lob. And it looks like this is a trend that will continue to grow strong in 2016. A versatile haircut, the lob offers far more styling options than the bob and is easier to carry off as well. Here’s hoping I see more women letting go of their lengths and getting a little scissor happy.

2. Liquid Lipsticks

There are quite a few cosmetic companies like Anastasia Beverly Hills, Stila, NYX Cosmetics, Too Faced, LA Splash, etc. that already make liquid lipsticks and I have to admit they look quite stunning. Liquid lipsticks cut out the need to use lip liners and are generally matte formulas that last several hours without budging. Now who doesn’t love a lipstick like that? Kylie Jenner’s famous Lip Kits — which sold out in 30 seconds (twice!) — also belong to this category. 2016 will only see the trend growing and we are not complaining.

3. K Beauty

Korean beauty products aren’t known as the Holy Grail of skincare for nothing. It’s only recently that the West has woken up to the treasure trove that is the Korean beauty industry. Koreans have been using cushion foundations much before Lancôme released its Miracle Cushion. And those sheet masks that everyone is obsessing over? Koreans had that nailed down as well. When it comes to skincare and cosmetics, Koreans are way ahead of everyone and we are only beginning to discover their priceless nuggets. 2016 belongs to more such discoveries.

4. Going Off Contouring

I’m guessing we’re all on the same page as far as contouring is concerned. We’re sick and tired of the unnaturally chiseled look. Who even looks like that IRL? How did this contouring thing get so out of hand? I’m guessing a light-handed application under your foundation won’t hurt anyone. I agree with make-up artist Wayne Goss, who says contouring should be done to add dimensions to the face and not to look chiseled. Follow his tutorial for a natural look. This followed by some flushed cheeks is what we’ll be seeing more of in 2016.

5. Natural Brows

Bold brows are still going strong and I don’t mind that at all. I’m glad we aren’t going back to the ‘tweezed to within a millimetre of their lives’ eyebrows circa the 90s. However, the overdrawn and overwhelming brows that we see aren’t a pleasing sight either. So while brows continue to reign supreme, they are taking a  far more relaxed, naturally bushy route. So allow those boyish sprouts to grow in all their shining glory, and give your brows an androgynous twist.

6. Faux Freckles

There was a carefree, child-like vibe at Ashish N Soni’s show at the Amazon India Fashion Week 2016. So I’m glad that freckles aren’t frowned upon anymore. In fact, anything that reminds me of summer, ice lollies, and running about in gay abandon is a good trend.

7. Twists

The formerly underrated hairstyle is making its presence felt in a major way and my heart is crying out with joy! Twists are the easiest way to amp up your basic hairstyle. They are easier and faster to make than braids. Pinky promise. Alia Bhatt has styled hers in so many ways, as has Deepika Padukone. Take a leaf out of these celeb-inspired twists and have fun wit your hair in 2016. Here’s to new #hairgoals.

8. Glitter

While I did say that this is one make-up trend we must leave behind in our teens, grown-up glitter is making an appearance in the most sassiest ways possible. So while glitter on the brows, roots, pits, and even beards is a little extreme, less is more is a better mantra to follow. A light dusting on the lips or strategically placed on the eyelids is way more fashion-forward.

9. Natural Texture

This year was dedicated to shorter hair and embracing your hair in its natural glory. Luckily, 2016 will continue to be a year of weaning yourself off your hot tools. Much like body positivity, embrace the texture your mama gave you. Break through stereotypes and love your straight/curly/wavy hair just the way it is.

10. ‘No Make-Up’ Make-Up

There’s a certain charm in looking like a bare-faced, natural beauty. 2015 saw the emergence of the no make-up make-up look (try it with this easy tutorial). I feel that we really needed this no make-up look, since it works best for first dates, interviews, formal occasions, and similar events where it is important to look polished without coming across as too strong. So here’s wishing we see more of this look in 2016.

11. Coffin Nails

When it comes to nail shapes, I don’t really have a favourite because I love them all. Whether they’re square or sqoval, rounded or oval, almond or stilleto, I love every kind. Off late, I’ve been seeing coffin nails pop up on my Instagram feed fairly regularly and it’s one trend I want to see more of because they’re so fierce!
